Welcome Message

Welcome to the Department of Development Studies, one of the Teaching and Research Departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Kyambogo University. The Department was created in 2018 and in effect, the Bachelor of Arts in Development Studies has grown in length and bounds over years to meet the market demands. On average, it attracts a total of 300 students every academic year on both day and evening Programmes.

Consequently, we are glad to say that since our commencement, excellent students from all around the globe have chosen to join the Department for their undergraduate studies as we continue to produce the much-needed human resource to serve in public and private institutions.  The main objective of the Department is to ensure that we equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for a career in the field of development. Our goal is to ensure that our students achieve a good understanding of the development approaches required to achieve sustainable development as we look forward to achieving SDGs.

Development studies is a multidisciplinary subject that puts emphasis on the progression of nations from cultural, political, geographical, and socio-economic perspectives. We are, therefore, delighted to see that our products have built successful careers in academia and beyond. Besides offering a Bachelor of Arts Development Studies, the Department is offering a Master of Arts in Development Studies. This Programme has been identified as one of the most market-responsive globally.

In due course, we intend to develop more academic programmes; a PhD in Development Studies, a Master of Social Science in Monitoring and Evaluation, a Master of Arts in Rural Development, a Bachelor of Natural Resource Management Bachelor of NGO Development and Management. The Department also hosts Development Studies exchange students from Oslo Metropolitan University, every academic year.

Plans of signing MOUs with a number of NGOs and Local Government institutions are almost complete. This partnership will create opportunities for training and readily available job openings for our graduates.

I, therefore, invite you to take a journey with us and go through our website to know more about us, our department, our programmes, upcoming programmes, partnerships, upcoming events, the commencement of summer school, the staff, alumni and current students. Do not hesitate to get in touch if you have questions. I hope you will follow up by contacting our staff and arranging a visit so that we can learn from each other. Thank You.
