Department of Sociology, Anthropology & Population Studies (Demography)
The Department nurtures critical thinkers and professionals through teaching, research, and community service in sociology, anthropology, and demography.
I welcome you to the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Population Studies (Demography) SAPS. It’s my high privilege to serve as Head of this dynamic academic unit in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Kyambogo University.
The Department is a dedicated place of service to our students through an enthusiastic, and incredibly dedicated staff members that are highly trained, qualified and specialized to deliver and create knowledge through teaching, research and community service. Our staff are trained from across the globe at some of the best institutions. You will be met with academic rigor, that shall excite and stimulate intellectual growth to help you make your dreams come true.
Because the areas of Sociology, Anthropology and Population Studies are always changing, we are also evolving to keep up with an increasingly complex society. What the Department offers fosters critical thinking, cultural awareness and a deeper understating of social issues especially the tools to analyze how societies are organized, how groups form and function, and how social institutions operate. Demography helps in understanding global challenges like aging populations, urbanization, fertility, mortality and migration, enabling informed decision-making on a global scale through policy development related to healthcare, education, and resource management. The fostered critical thinking encourages students to question assumptions, analyze social phenomena objectively, and develop reasoned arguments, which are a vital skill for any field.
Our robust internship programme endeavours to blend theory with real-world experience and community dynamics. We are proud to share that our graduates always excel with their postgraduate studies and have impressive absorption rates in the labour market. We strive to balance theoretical and practical learning opportunities through mentorship and fieldwork experiences. The varied teaching methods; lectures, discussions, case studies and practical experiences, ensure that students develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for success in their careers.
We continually strive to be at the forefront of understanding social change and seeking new opportunities to add value to our students and society at large. Soon, we shall have our Master of Applied Sociology (MAS) and a Master of Population Studies (MPS) on boarded. All this is aimed at serving society through the public and private sectors including the emerging public-private partnerships.
We invite you to join us. I personally look forward to seeing you!
