Programme Information
Background
The Bachelor of Arts in Arts comprises of Arts and Social Science subjects/disciplines. The Arts disciplines comprise History, Religious Studies, Geography, Luganda, English Language Studies, Literature, French Language Studies, and Music. The Social Sciences disciplines comprise of Sociology, Political Science and Public Administration, Psychology Economics and Social Administration which is being reviewed.
Social administration is a discipline required worldwide and in Uganda in particular, for its topical issues in development, methodologies and skills. It is being offered in other universities under Social Sciences or Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences.
This discipline has been designed to meet critical issues, of poverty, vulnerability, provision of safety nets for the vulnerable, gender mainstreaming, issues of people with disabilities, local governance and social policy seeks to equip the students with the methodologies and practices of working with and in communities.
Practicals are also catered for in a term paper as well as an internship of six weeks. The discipline therefore provides both the theoretical knowledge as well as the practical skills required by prospective administrators.
N.B: It is hoped that all the requirements of admission to the programme will remain as they have been.
Target Group
The target group will include:
i A’ level leavers with at least 2 principal passes.
ii Diploma holders in Arts based courses
iii Persons who have passed Mature Age Entry Examinations.
General Objectives
- Train graduate level human resource that will provide quality services in the country.
(ii) Provide high quality education that will enable students to realize their human and academic potential.
(iii) Equip learners with a wide range of content in humanities.
(iv) Equip the students with knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them join the world to work as useful members of their communities and the nation.
Specific objectives
By the end of the programme, students should be able to:
- Lead and manage the affairs of society.
- Exhibit positive attitudes, values and ethics towards work and the life.
- Provide counseling services to members of society with social problems.
- Be enterprising and create jobs for self and others.
- Offer interpretation and editorial services.
- Offer language and functional literacy services.
- Carry out research on various issues in society.
- Plan and write projects in their fields of operation.
- Apply ICT Skills by building language and technical barrier
- Conserve cultures and heritage.
Direct Entry
Admission to the discipline shall be done in accordance with Kyambogo University Regulations. A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the programme on meeting minimum requirements.
Mature age
Those who have passed Mature Age Entry Examination in those subjects which he/she desires to study at the University.
OR
A diploma holder or equivalent qualifications in an Arts-based course from a recognized institution provided he/she has at least a second class diploma award.
Subject Rating
In addition to Kyambogo requirements for admission, the subjects will be read as follows:-
Essential – Two best done of the Arts subjects.
Relevant – Third best done of the Arts
Desirable – General Paper, Kiswahili, Sub-mathematics
Programme Duration
The Bachelor of Arts in Arts programme where the discipline belongs is a full-time day and evening programme of six semesters.

Each subject comprises several courses per semester as shown below
In addition to these, each student on this programme, shall take Basic Studies comprising of Communication Skills, Information Technology, and Human Empowerment and Basic Entrepreneurship as indicated in paragraph 8.1 below.
B.A (Arts) programme will be a Single Major with a Minor and will be structured as follows:
Year I –
A student will drop one of the three subject areas and choose Major and a Minor subject from the two remaining subjects. A student will then take 4 courses (including 2 cores) per semester from his/her Minor subject. The student will also take 2 courses in Information Technology in Year II and 2 courses in Human Empowerment and Basic Entrepreneurship in Year III. A total of 14 courses in each of Years II and III.
- An illustration of how Social Administration shall combine with Sociology and Economics in the programme from year one to year three, as the major subjects.
