Introduction and Background to the Department

The department of Political Science and Public Administration, which is under the stewardship of the Head of Department who manages its day to day activities, was established in 2003 under the former History and Political Science Department. With the current population of 483 undergraduates, 41 PhD and 29 MA students, the department in its new context was launched on January 1, 2022 in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The department has a broad undergraduate and graduate curricula designed to contribute to the understanding of the state, government, society and the pertinent relationships. To achieve the planned goals, the undergraduate curricula focus on Political Science, Public Administration and Resource Governance, and Security and Diplomatic Studies as the core academic sub-disciplines. The latter constitute the core fields of interest to students who have the desire to play a major role in public, private and international affairs. The Department offers programmes that prepare students for a professional career in public service, politics, diplomatic service, and the private sector.

For students who wish to pursue postgraduate studies prior to entering a career in teaching and/or research, diplomatic work, politics or public affairs, public administration, or any other aspect of the profession or real-world politics, the programmes provide a sound and comprehensive foundation. Above all, the programmes provide the students with sufficient preparatory’ work for students going into graduate and professional fields, such as public administration, public policy and governance, international affairs, peace and conflict studies as well as related fields. In particular, students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences may opt to major in political science in preparation for graduate study that widens career opportunities in the pertinent diverse fields of study

Philosophy

The philosophy of the department is “Advancing freedom for human dignity through teaching, learning, practical community internship engagements, innovation and empirical research”. This philosophical underpinning is inspired by the Kyambogo University motto of “Knowledge and skills for service”
